{"id":137,"date":"2012-11-20T20:13:34","date_gmt":"2012-11-20T20:13:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tynemouthsc.co.uk\/wordpress\/?page_id=137"},"modified":"2026-02-16T17:12:19","modified_gmt":"2026-02-16T17:12:19","slug":"rya-1-2-courses","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/tynemouthsc.co.uk\/index.php\/learn-to-sail-at-tynemouth-sailing-club\/rya-1-2-courses\/","title":{"rendered":"RYA 1 &#038; 2 Courses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Worldwide, the main training courses for dinghy sailing are developed by the Royal Yacht Association &#8211; we provide those RYA courses at Tynemouth. \u00a0Most people start sailing with multi day courses normally referred to as <strong>RYA1 Start Sailing<\/strong> and <strong>RYA2 Basic Skills.\u00a0<\/strong>The RYA has more details <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rya.org.uk\/training\/small-boat-sailing\/dinghy\">here\u00a0<\/a>for whats involved.<\/p>\n<p>We typically run RYA dinghy courses on Saturdays at Tynemouth early enough in the season so you can continue into Sunday morning adult improver \/ coaching sessions to really get a feel for the sport &amp; build time on the water. Don&#8217;t feel the need to wait for that though &#8211; <a title=\"Contact\" href=\"http:\/\/tynemouthsc.co.uk\/index.php\/contact\/\">contact us<\/a> or just turn up and chat Wed evenings through the year or sunday mornings from May to August (10 am or 1pm)<\/p>\n<p>The club has all the <a title=\"What to Wear\" href=\"http:\/\/tynemouthsc.co.uk\/index.php\/training\/what-to-wear\/\">gear <\/a>you will need &#8211; just turn up willing to learn and if the weather is good you will have a great time. If the wind is too strong or there is fog (which occasionally happens) we switch focus to more of the theory or powerboat based training.<\/p>\n<p>Each course is typically held on 5 saturdays across May &amp; June with fallback dates if the weather should be too poor for sailing.<\/p>\n<p>As we only run courses once each year, they are typically in strong demand. If you aren&#8217;t entirely sure its for you, the ideal chance to check is our &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/tynemouthsc.co.uk\/index.php\/discover-sailing\/\">Discover Sailing&#8221; open day <\/a>\u00a0on Saturday 9th May.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">If you want to learn to sail, we recommend you block the dates out asap in your diary. 2026 <\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Dates are: <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Open day 9th May, <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">RYA 1: 16th, 23rd &amp; 30th May: <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">RYA 2: 6th &amp; 13th June<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>You can book for the <a href=\"https:\/\/club.spond.com\/landing\/courses\/tynemouthsailing\/27B1A741F640473F896167C249E6517D\">sail training courses\u00a0 1 &amp; 2<\/a> on our Spond site which also gives further details, a &#8220;what to wear&#8221; sheet etc.<\/p>\n<p>(There is a separate set of RYA courses and qualifications, Competent Crew, Day Skipper etc. for those who want to learn to sail <strong><em>yachts<\/em><\/strong> &#8211; but we don&#8217;t provide those at the club as we don&#8217;t have facilities for those larger boats.
