We will be having an ENTERPRISE CLASS MEETING for members at the Club on Monday 21st January at 8pm to discuss sailing activities in 2013, and to get feedback from owners before the Sailing Program is finalised. If you have an Ent, please come and have your say.

Matthew Middlemiss is organising a Burns night supper on the 25th of January to raise money to fund his gap year in Malaysia. He needs to raise £5,400 by the end of July 2013 to enable Project Trust to send him to Malaysia. During Matthew’s gap year he will be instructing outward bound activities to people of all ages. If you can’t come, but would like to help in another way you can also donate online at http://uk.virginmoneygiving.
If you would like to come please let any of the Middlemiss’ know of your interest by the 12th of January and send a cheque for £15 made payable to C A Middlemiss to 11 Westley Avenue, Whitley Bay, Tyne and Wear, NE26 4NW (with a stamped addressed envelope). This will work on a first-come-first-served basis and those who have paid will get preference of tickets. The poster below is also available as a PDF if you want to email it.

Basics of Rescue seminar
This talk will be given by Mike Shipway at the Club on Wednesday 9th January at 8pm, and is one not to miss if you may do rescue duty at any time next season. It will provide essential knowledge that you should not be without. Please make every effort to attend.
The bar will be open.
New Years Resolution: Start Sailing
Its that time of year again when you are thinking about how to be a better version of yourself. Many think about health – for good reason after a week of overindulgence.
So heres one idea for getting fit you might not have considered – small dinghy sailing in Tynemouth. You don’t need much fitness to start, but the better you get the fitter you will become.
See this link for a great introduction from the RYA, this link from the BBC also about starting to sail and here. If you are interested, contact us.
Wow, where did the beach go?
Wednesday Night Talks on Sailing
Our series of Tynemouth Sailing Club winter talks has been planned – and we will be holding them on a Wednesday at 8.00 p.m. for no more than an hour. See below for the program (and in the calendar shortly) & other events pre-season.
Although four of the talks are aimed at “Lasers” much of the content will be applicable to other boats as well. They will be aimed at those who have started sailing relatively recently and will not be “expert” although we plan to show some of the coaching DVDs. THere may be a couple of additons to the programme below. We hope to see a good number of you for the talks and afterwards at the bar, as well as at other events.

Laser Sailors views sought
Did you know we have 25 laser owners?! We have; ( or will have next season) we’ve just counted. Imagine if we all sailed at once! The sailing committee have been tossing around a few ideas for getting “more people sailing more often , more people racing more often” to quote the RYA’s current refrain. These include as possibilities
- A pre-race training session on Sunday morning
- Rescue cover for those who want to go and do a bit of pre-race tuning or practice with a training partner on a Wednesday.
- Joint sailing with South Shields on some Sundays.
- A review of starting times on Sundays and Fridays
- Some Sunday cruises as last year, including one on Great North Run day.
- Handicap racing on a Sunday
- Use of personal handicaps
- Different race formats ; more and shorter, pursuits.
- Different race courses ; triangle sausage, trapezoidal, windward leeward etc.
- Named “Buddies”: two levels ; a training buddy ( same standard ) and a mentor.
- A number of coaching sessions from external coaches which could be Saturday, Sunday or Friday Night. I have already asked the local RYA official to budget for 8!
However we cannot sensibly decide these in glorious isolation. We need to know your constraints, your wishes, your thoughts about what we do to make next season attractive and accessible for you. We need to do this soon to sort out the programme. So we would very much like your presence at a TSC Laser Class
Meeting to be held on Wednesday January 2nd at 20.00 hrs at the club. ( New Year hangovers should have subsided and if not you can have a “hair of the dog”.) The bar will be pre-warmed and the beer cold.
