Prizegiving dinner

As a footnote to what was a very nice evening, I need to add that overall winner of the Long Race 2012 was Sarah Piper, and she should have been awarded the Tyne Goblet (one of the better looking trophies) and an engraved glass. Sorry it was overlooked last night Sarah, we will present them to you at the next opportunity.

Coastal Communities Grant

We talked about this grant at the AGM and the possibilities it holds for the club. There was some hope that news of the application made through the council to Government, would be known by very early 2013 but to date all is quiet. Hope is not lost though and word is that the outcome is delayed- not lost.

Part of the proposal is the possibility of a ramp at the Haven and we’re pleased to get word that trial holes are to be dug at the Haven beach next week to get samples ahead of any work to put down foundations. It is one small step for tired sailors………..we shall see

Goodbye Lorna

The club is sad to let members know of the recent death of Lorna Scammell.

Lorna was involved in the sailing club for many years and was made an  Honorary Life Member at an AGM a couple of years ago in recognition of her significant contribution to the work and life of the club. Lorna held a number of positions including Sailing Secretary and her passion was ensuring that sailing was available to all.

We watched with awe and admiration as she took to ‘big boat’ sailing and her stories of single handed sailing as she went round the East Coast and further were impressive. In recent years we were amused and  at times worried  by her SEALORNA web stories but she clearly loved her life and worked hard to get the best out of it for herself and others. We will miss our friend and extend our condolences to her family.

In recognition of our respect for Lorna the club will be making a contribution to the RNLI

New Years Resolution: Start Sailing

Its that time of year again when you are thinking about how to be a better version of yourself. Many think about health – for good reason after a week of overindulgence.

So heres one idea for getting fit you might not have considered – small dinghy sailing in Tynemouth. You don’t need much fitness to start, but the better you get the fitter you will become.

See this link for a great introduction from the RYA,  this link from the BBC also about starting to sail and here.  If you are interested, contact us.
