Today, Tuesday 14th january 2014, work begins on removing asbestos from the Clubhouse as the first stage in renovating the building. The builders have changed the locks to prevent would be sight-seers getting injured, so the clubhouse is out of bounds for the time being. We hope to get access again in March when members’ expertise in delivering finishing touches will be required. (extra note in early March – looks like May before we get in to use the building much)

Well, its the end of the season and … the scores are on the doors. Thanks to Howard for running these. Click the links to see how you did. Some of the results are only TSC, others are combined fleet with South Shields Sailing Club
Renovation update
A useful meeting was held with interested members on Wednesday night to discuss what we would like to be done, but of course we don’t have enough money for everything. Mike and I met the Archtitect on Friday and discussed how to approach the issue with contractors, we will be having discussions with them next week, hopefully. Its a tight schedule if it’s all to be finished by March 2014 (note added early March – that might have been a bit optimistic – currently looking at mid May). 2 weeks to go before we hear about our second bid for funds (to SITA). Fingers crossed.

this Sunday the weather looks as if it might be good. If the wind is manageable there will be coaching in the morning, (turn up 10ish), followed later by 3 races for the Club Class Championships. If the wind is too strong for coaching but still sailable the racing will go ahead from 11.
‘Key’ Inter-Club Quiz Trophy still on Tynemouth Shore
At the end of the recent Inter-Club quiz, it was somewhat remiss of us not to thank everyone over there for welcoming two SSSC teams to enjoy some of their usual Tynemouth hospitality. We do that now even at some distance from the event, whilst explaining however that such oversight was undoubtedly due to the shock of being defeated in the final round of questions on ‘Sailing’ (of all subjects) by such a significant margin running into double figures when, at the interval before the mushy peas, both SSSC teams were well in contention and indeed one of them, the ‘OMEGA-Miracles’, had assumed a two-point decisive tactical lead in this hotly contested comp. between the Clubs, albeit this position being achieved only after a necessary challenge to over-zealous down-marking by a rival Tynemouth team.
The inevitable inquest arising from such a decisive loss however has been informative to say the least, to the extent that it is now well understood why Tynemouth failed to host last year’s quiz. This was undoubtedly because Howard needed yet a further year to finish compiling his questions for the final marathon 40-pointer ‘Sailing’ round to his desired level of obscurity.
The minutiae of this summer’s fine England Ashes victory will undoubtedly find their way into the detailed statistical history since 1864 of that fine sport in Wisden’s Cricket Almanac. Based on our experience at Tynemouth, we must conclude that a similar volume surely exists on ‘Sailing’. We also believe that only Howard and the successful Tynemouth ‘BAR’ team are owners of such a valuable tome. Its importance can be likened only to that of Dr Johnson’s first English dictionary of 1774, discombobulatingly burned by Baldrick. It can be taken that we will be seeking our own copy of this valuable work on sailing for the use of the SSSC-appointed question master and for assiduous study by SSSC teams for the 2014 end of season Inter-Club Quiz to be held at South Shields.
In particular, we will be seeking to verify from such a valuable source, as suggested by the required answer to one of the questions in the now infamous ‘sailing’ round, that Jackie Gebhard, well known in North East sailing circles, is indeed related to a successful team member of a 2012 Olympic sailing crew, or whoever, or whatever. ‘Not a lot of people know that’ to quote one Michael Caine, that famous actor who appeared in ‘Get Carter’ alongside a good friend of mine, the late Alan Hockey, well-known South Shields actor who had to borrow a pair of wellies from another friend of mine, for his role as the scrap dealer in the same film. Not a lot of people know that either. But I do and I am hoping it might come up in a future inter-Club quiz in a ‘local knowledge’ round. Well, enough! We look forward to 2014 and another chance to bring the trophy back across the water…
