Scammell Dash next Sunday + Annual Wednesday Night Quiz with SSSC Wednesday 4th September

The Scammell Dash around the yellow (Explosives Dumping Ground) buoy about one mile south east of St Mary’s Lighthouse will be held this Sunday, weather permitting. This is an open sea handicap race based on Portsmouth Yardsticks, with a combined start. The start time is 11 am within the harbour. I am sure you don’t need reminding to keep clear of shipping on pain of disqualification or worse. Best also to avoid the fishermen on the piers. SSSC have also been invited to participate. p.s.: the buoy is to be left to port.

The annual Quiz team event against SSSC will take place at our Club on Wednesday 4th September at 8pm. Please don’t miss it, it’s good fun and a pie and peas supper will be provided. Newish members especially welcome.

Cragside Sailing Event, Saturday 31st August

The sailing should start around 12pm (depending on weather conditions). Ideally we would arrive at 11.30am at Nellys Moss Lake with the boats.

There is a disabled toilet next to the playground (300m away from where we launch the boats), that we can use to change. We would park our cars and trailers there after we launched the boats. Not sure about the max. numbers of boats, but it will be fairly cramped with more than 6…? As the event should go on until 4pm, it might make sense to share boats and take turns. Wolfgang is checking if the sailors get free entrance to Cragside.

Wolfgang is happy to provide some food/drinks for the keen sailors who show up. Ideally he would know how many people/boats are coming by mid next week & will ask if we can have a BBQ there. Maybe we can take along the BBQ from the club? If not I will bring sandwiches or something similar.

His plan is to pick up his boat & trailer at Tynemouth at 10.30am & could take another Laser on top of mine (he has some gear that would allow that) and can take other sailors along in my car as well. Does any of you want a lift – if so get in touch with Wolfgang direct

Sport England Award £50k to the Club

Tynemouth Sailing Club are delighted today to hear that the application for a grand from Sport England has been granted. This is specifically targeted towards refurbishment of the clubhouse. Many of the members responded to an email survey & that response helped to determine the priority listing for the work to be done in the application: New heating , wiring, showers changing room benches and flooring and general club redecoration.

Quotes for the work so far received vary between £198k and £148k and we have made an application to the Sita trust for £60k with the club committing £29k.

In September we will arrange a meeting to further inform members and to consult on the detail of shower designs, decorative schemes etc.

Heres a further report from the RYA

Ladies Trophy Racing – This Sunday

Some of you might have noticed that the year book advertises that this coming Sunday that the first two races ( it’s a 3 race day ) are for the Ladies Trophies. ( Interestingly the “deed of gift” in the trophy book actually says best 2 results out of three. It also says the winner must be a member of the club. And it says “open to all classes sailing 5 or more boats” but we’ll ignore that bit! )
Plural because we have two. One is for the first lady on handicap whether helm or crew. The other is the Lady Helmsman’s trophy. ( that’s what it’s called ; note that it was presented in 1971 by Lorry Young and J Trumble. ) ( Which J I wonder?)
So who is going to turn out to contest this silverware? There is no age limit so personally I fancy the chances of one MJ
Maybe newcomer Claire fancies her chances if her boat will stay together? Will the last winner turn out? She bought a boat but sadly we haven’t seen her. There are two Rodgerson ladies and two Enterprises in the family ; will we see them on a Sunday?
I strongly suspect at least one Enterprise will put in an appearance and my bet is on an all female crew to try and lift both trophies in the same boat. ( Well the crew crosses the line first so they must win surely?) Toppers are eligible so will a cadet lift the trophy? A 200? ( with a guest works jocky helm?) A 59er? A crew on a trapeze? There are endless possibilities.
Seriously if anyone wants to borrow a laser ( with a decent sail ) or even maybe an Enterprise see Mike S – he will be sailing his laser and hopes to see more than one or two of you on the start line.

Kill Cord Timely Reminder

Investigations into the recent tragic accident in Padstow find that the boat was fitted with a kill cord, but that it was not attached to the driver at the time.

The RYA reminds all owners and operators of such vessels fitted with a kill cord to;

1. Test them regularly to ensure that the engine stops when the kill cord mechanism is operated

2. Make sure that the cord is in good condition

3. Always attach the cord to the driver, ideally before the engine is started, but certainly before the engine is put in gear

4. When changing drivers, it is strongly recommended that you should turn off the engine before transferring the kill cord from one driver to the other

5. The engine should only be restarted when the kill cord has been securely attached to the new driver.

The kill cord serves only one vital purpose, to stop the engine when the driver moves away from the controls for whatever reason.

We all know it makes sense, let’s not have a repeat of this tragedy. Read what the RYA has to say about this.

Ramp

The council has submitted an application for permission for a ramp at The Haven. The council are clear this does not offer a commitment to build the ramp at the Haven now or in the near future. There is no funding available to construct it and as reported the Coastal Communities Grant application, as far as funding a ramp, was not successful. The council are continuing the building process in principle as funding could become available at some time in the future. At this time the council is very clear that they have no funds and no start date to build a ramp.

The users of the Haven (sailing and rowing clubs and Red Seal) have met with the council over the issue of the ramp and will continue to do so. In  particular the clubs are keen to deal with issues such as

  • The associated infrastructure to ensure the ramp use is appropriate for all users of the Haven
  • Parking at the Haven
  • Licensed use of the ramp and enforcement

Members will be kept up to date on this issue. This link shows the Ramp plan schematic
